Oil Painting Workshop

My name is Tom Humbert, and I am an accomplished conservator and portrait artist with years of experience restoring and preserving fine art. I have cleaned and restored well over a hundred paintings and antique picture frames, bringing new life to artworks that span centuries.

In addition to restoration, I am passionate about teaching the traditional oil painting techniques of the early Italian Renaissance masters. My goal is to pass along the timeless skills and methods that defined that era — techniques that create depth, realism, and enduring beauty in every painting.

I offer one-week oil painting workshops, held Monday through Friday. During the week, students learn step-by-step how to prepare panels, layer glazes, mix colors, and achieve the luminous effects characteristic of Renaissance art.

Special attention is given to portrait techniques, including how to render eyes with lifelike precision so that the subject's gaze appears to follow the viewer across the room — an enduring optical effect mastered by Renaissance artists through careful placement, direct frontal gaze, subtle shading, and highlights that create the illusion of eye contact from any angle.

If you’d like to be notified when a workshop is available in your area, please join the waiting list here.

If you’d like to coordinate a workshop in your area, apply here. Volunteer to Host / Coordinate a workshop in your area.

Below are some examples of my own oil paintings, along with a selection restoration projects I’ve had the privilege to work on over the years.
